Description:  The first Touch Research Institute was formally established in 1992 by Director Tiffany Field, Ph.D. at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Established via a start-up grant from Johnson & Johnson, TRI was the first center in the world devoted solely to the study of
touch and its application in science and medicine.

TRI's distinguished team of researchers, representing Duke, Harvard, Maryland, and other universities, strives to better define touch as it promotes health and contributes to the treatment of disease. Research efforts that began in 1982 and continue today have shown that touch
therapy has numerous beneficial effects on human well-being.

The second TRI, located at Nova Southeastern University, was established in 1997 to launch a number of wellness programs for healthy parents and infants. A third TRI is currently being established in the Philippines by a group of neonatologists who have replicated previous studies showing that preterm infants' weight gain can be facilitated by massage therapy.

Specifically, we have shown that massage therapy can increase weight gain in premature infants and alter EEG in the direction of heightened alertness. It also alleviates depressive symptoms, reduces stress hormones, alleviates pain and positively alters the immune system in children
and adults with various medical conditions.
